Medicare is a federally managed health insurance program offering coverage to Americans aged 65 and over, as well as younger individuals with certain disabilities. Established in 1965 when Lyndon B Johnson signed it into law, it operates on a fee-for-service model with two parts:

  • Part A (Hospital Insurance): Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care.
  • Part B (Medical Insurance): Covers doctor’s services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and some preventive services.

Medicare provides access to doctors, hospitals, and other healthcare providers, but it’s important to understand its limitations. Beneficiaries must pay deductibles and co-insurance for covered services, and there’s no annual cap on out-of-pocket expenses. Furthermore, routine dental, vision care, and hearing are not covered by Original Medicare.

Individuals seeking comprehensive health insurance may need to consider additional plans like Medicare Advantage or Medigap to supplement their coverage and address these gaps.

Medicare supplements, also known as Medigap plans, are private health insurance plans that can help pay for some of the out-of-pocket costs associated with Original Medicare (Part A and Part B).

These plans are sold by private insurance companies and are not affiliated with Medicare.

Medigap plans can help cover costs such as:

  • Copayments
  • Deductibles
  • Excess charges
  • Medicare Part B Coinsurance
  • Skilled nursing facility coinsurance
  • Hospice coinsurance

In addition to the standard benefits of Medicare Part A and B, Medicare Advantage plans (Part C), and Medicare Part D for prescription drugs, there are also additional benefits available.
